Finding a veil with designer Peter Langner

Helen recently spoke with our exclusive veil designer Peter Langner about the design process for his team in Milan and his insights into finding your perfect veil:

Where do you get your inspiration from for your veil collection?

Like with my gowns, I get inspired from everything around me like art, nature painting, sculpture, architecture, music, all forms of art. And of course from the fabric itself. Touching a fabric or an embroidery, keeping it in your hands, weaving, shredding, manipulating it, makes you create beautiful things.

Why do you think it is important for a bride to finish her wedding look with a veil?

The veil will have the task to frame, enhance and complete the final look. The veil is that missing puzzle piece able to complete the overall picture. It is important that the wedding dress and the veil must talk to each other and, more importantly, listen to each other. There is not competition between them, there is no prize for what is noted more.

What are your thoughts on whether a bride should wear a veil over her face?

I think it is something that is really up to the bride. Someone feels the veil over her face as a sort of protection, for others is just about how they want to appear at first sight. I think it is up to the bride’s feeling. Anyway using a blusher over the face can be just a first appearance, pulling it behind your head just after.

What trends are there at the moment with veils?

The truth is that we try to stay above these statements like trends. We like to see our designs ‘outside’ the lines and rules of fashion. We want to make timeless looks, which go beyond a season or trend. This is something that is true for both dresses and veils. We never start with a big idea. Each of our collections comes from textile research and new fabric processing. The collection comes to life as we create it, step by step, each veil at a time. Of course for veils it is a bit different, because we usually start from the dress and than think about a veil that can beautifully complete it without outshining it.

How long does it take to make the Amelie veil?

Amelie is fully hand embroidered with a particular fabric that is an oganza with wool flowers on it. We cut each flower from the organza and sew it again on the tulle. It takes around 14 hours.
